I've always loved beauty, I was just tired of beauty business as usual.
Many people always show their successes and victories whether it's on social media, or tv. A lot of us feel like failures because we see successful people, but we never see what they went through to get to that point or peak of their success.
Much of the work I do is hidden simply because of the nature of it. When I edit my website it's just me, or when I come up with
concepts no one is around, when I'm filming Tiktok's, or even now writing this blog post( that I call my diary entries). The point is no one is physically seeing me do the work all the time, it's like a painter or a writer most of their work is done in their hermit mode.
That being said I wanted to make that "hermit mode" visible, in a vulnerable way. So many people have had a perception of me, maybe because of how I carry myself, or how others perceive I look ( thank God I don't look like what I've been through), they assume it's always easy for me or that I've "made it" in some way. I share the behind-the-scenes video of the creation of the Greenwood Collection on YouTube as a documentary , because I want people to see the reality of going after your dreams and living your purpose even if it isn't glamourous. If you haven't watched it yet, please do bestie!
The truth is I've felt like a failure and sometimes so crumby. I've been working on my beauty business for years and my jewelry business for a little over a year, and it feels like I've never quite reached that point of where it fully sustains me. I've gone months and years without a single order, yes you read that right. I think part of it is, that I started this business at 17 years old going on 18, I had no guidance, and still to a degree have no guidance or mentors. Everything I've learned I've had to learn on my own and by myself. It's like I've learned all of my lessons the hard way. You probably can relate even if your dream isn't building a beauty empire from scratch , maybe you were the first to go to college in your family, and it was hard for you to know how to set yourself up for success, or apply for scholarships, because no one in your immediate environment had ever done it, so you had to learn on your own and take that sacred voyage.
When creating this collection, I literally had to face all of my fears when it comes to failure. I had that little "victoria devil " with a pitchfork with lipsticks for points tell me " see you are going to fail, all of your collections before haven’t made a difference or impact so give up why try?".. I know what it's like to persevere when giving up seems like the logical option. Beauty was always something I loved growing up and as I started working on my business, I have finally found my unique formula that makes beauty authentic for me. I had to come to the conclusion that creating a beauty business that just takes pictures of models with a product wasn't enough. I also came to the conclusion that being a beauty business that features " woke" , or going against the "beauty standard" alone wasn't enough for me either, as whether it's sincere or not it has become a trend, even if its performative.
Everything I learned and gained from the 5+ years of "failure" brought me to the conclusion that if I want to pursue beauty it has to be beauty with purpose, a cause and more activism mixed within it. I know you're thinking" what is this lady on?", "beauty isn't that serious", or "it's just makeup". When you realize that the beauty industry is worth billions of dollars and beauty crosses all cultural barriers and backgrounds, you realize it's literally the perfect platform, if done right. I say all of that to say this.
If you want to do something, do it. Don't feel like you have to have everything together, or you have to have x- amount of money, yes plan and be smart, but it doesn't have to be perfect in order for people to resonate with you. I think so many people forget we all have a unique quality, and we all have something to offer, we just get so inundated with a skewed filter of success on social media from views, likes, shares or overall attention that we think if we aren't flexing, we haven't made something that this world sees value in.
Be the person that takes life by the stick ( meaning lipstick)! and do what you want to do. Be the change you want to see in the world, because no matter what barriers or blocks you might experience you have the power to create a shift in your life and the lives of others in your communit.
